MEET PROFESSOR SERGIO ESQUIVEL

Professor Sergio Esquivel is the owner and head instructor of Sugoi Submissions Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Corpus Christi, Texas. As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and United States Marine Corps veteran, he has built an academy known for structured training, high standards, and a welcoming environment for beginners, experienced students, and families alike.

HEAD INSTRUCTOR

Sugoi Submissions

Professor Sergio began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2005 under the BJJ Revolution Team while serving in the United States Marine Corps. During his service, he became a certified Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, responsible for teaching and mentoring hundreds of Marines in close-quarters combat and practical self-defense.

His experience extends beyond traditional training environments. He taught both on base and during deployments, developing a coaching style that combines technical precision with real-world application. Over the years, he continued training across the United States and internationally, including competing in Japan, further refining his approach to instruction.

This background shapes the structure of Sugoi Submissions today. Training is focused, intentional, and built on fundamentals that work under pressure.

Sugoi Submissions

I had a great experience at Sugoi Submissions Jiu Jitsu. Even as a complete beginner, I felt very welcome from the moment I arrived. The coach, Sergio was knowledgeable, explained techniques clearly, and the flow of the class was excellent. A family friendly, supportive environment I’d definitely recommend to anyone interested in training.

Sugoi Submissions is where I began my jiu-jitsu journey, and I’m truly grateful for the foundation I built there. The coaching is knowledgeable and detail-oriented, with a strong focus on technical development, and the environment is both challenging and respectful. There’s a genuine sense of community that pushes you to improve while supporting your growth. It’s an outstanding place to start your training or continue developing at a high level, and I highly recommend it.

I’ve known Sergio since 2006 when we served together as Drill Instructors in the Marine Corps, and I can confidently say he’s someone who takes discipline, leadership, and teaching seriously. While I don’t train at this academy as a regular student, I have trained alongside him for years in Marine Corps Martial Arts and Jiu-Jitsu, and I’ve seen him coach many times.
